When we read and write, we seek something in the unfolding of pages, poems, stories, lines, words, syllables, sounds, and the blank spaces betwixt and between. And we seek more than something: possibilities, assurances, identity, becoming, belonging, connection, pleasure, and, sometimes, a way to pass the time. Let's say this search is how we pass the time. In this workshop, we'll share this search by reading and writing under the aegis of our need not just to pass time but to share time, give each other the time of day, to create time when it seems there's both too much of it and not enough. The way we'll do this is to write, share what we write, read aloud some writing by, at the very least, Amiri Baraka, erica kaufman, Hart Crane, and Simone White, and then write again and share what we write.
Anna Vitale is a poet-writer and host to the freeform radio show The Tenderness Junction on WGXC 90.7 FM. She teaches writing at New York University and Bard College's Language and Thinking Program. Anna lives with her husband in Tivoli, NY.
